Ukraine could adopt biogas and abandon gas imports
This was stated by Serhiy Makogon, CEO of Gas Transmission System Operator Ukraine of Ukraine LLC (Gas TSO of Ukraine), according to Ukrinform.
"Ukraine has a very large potential for biogas production – up to 8 billion cubic metres of biogas per year. This is a very ambitious goal for the next 10 years. But 0.5 billion cubic metres of biogas in two years is quite real,” he said.
"Ukraine has a real opportunity to completely abandon gas imports through the development of its own gas production and biogas production," he wrote.
As an example, Makogon cited Denmark, where 27 percent of the gas in the networks is biomethane (biogas brought to methane quality) and in the last five to six months there has been steady growth. Denmark expects to have a 100 percent ‘green’ gas system in 2030-2035.
As Ukrinform reported earlier, one of the focal points in Ukraine's Recovery Plan is devoted to achieving energy independence.
According to prime minister Denys Shmyhal, first of all, it is about of a significant increase in own gas production in order to fully cover the country’s own demand.
Not only has Ukraine become permanently disconnected from the Russian and Belarusian energy systems – it has also lost dependency on their petroleum products.
