Spanish olive oil producers invest in biomethane sector

Large olive oil producers are entering the biomethane business in the province of Jaén in Spain.
Four projects to produce biogas from alpeorujo are underway, with a joint investment of €137 million from the municipalities of Martos, Guarromán, Castellar and Mancha Real, financed through public-private collaboration.
The Minister of Agriculture, Ramón Fernández Pacheco, announced aid of €41 million for these projects, which cover a third of the disbursement.
Another third is backed by the producers Dcoop, Jaencoop and Interóleo, Migasa in another and also by El Tejar. The rest of the planned investments are covered by private investors.
In Martos, the company Biometano Martos will invest €43.6 million in an industrial project backed by Dcoop, Jaencoop and Interóleo, together with the orujera San Miguel Arcángel, which has the largest plant in the sector worldwide. Molveno Investments, a Frankfurt-based company, is also participating in the project.
This plant has a tractor effect, as it will allow the development of an industrial estate in Martos, where Petroprix has also acquired land, so the news has a scope for the town beyond the industrial development of the project.
The administration initially planned to allocate €13 million to collaborate with projects for the energy use of alpeorujo.
The success of the call, with four projects that met the requirements, has made the new councilor Ramón Fernández-Pacheco rethink the situation and extend the aid to the final 41 million.
The beneficiaries now have a deadline to present all the documentation required by the administration.
It is estimated that the four plants that benefit from this line of aid will require around 400,000 tons of alpeorujo per season to operate.
