Shell to purchase biogas from Nature Energy

Shell Energy Europe has agreed to purchase biogas from Danish firm Nature Energy.

The agreement is, to date, the largest of its kind in the world, according to Nature Energy, and confirms that biogas has an important role to play in the green transition. The firms have not revealed the size of the agreement.

Ole Hvelpund, CEO of Nature Energy, commented: “The agreement is a blue stamp of biogas as an important part of the green transition that is taking place all over the world. We are proud that an energy mastodon like Shell is investing in biogas from us.

“The agreement is a commercial breakthrough for biogas and at the same time gives us more muscle to realise new biogas projects. We have ambitions to build several large-scale biogas plants in Denmark, North America, and Europe, and here the agreement with Shell is an important step on the path for Nature energy, but also for the green conversion.”

Hvelpund added that the company has “no doubt” that it is the right move to work with Shell in getting more biogas out in Europe and that Shell is “pleased with the deal”.

Jonathan McCloy, general manager at Shell Energy Europe, said: “We believe that green and CO2- neutral biogas is an important part of green change today and in the future. That is why this trade is also an important part of our work to provide climate-friendly energy solutions to our customers across Europe.

“We are very pleased with this major biogas agreement, which strengthens our relationship with Nature Energy.”
