Nestle has installed a biomass boiler at its factory in Kabirwala, Pakistan.
The biomass boiler will contribute to a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, and generate 80,000 tonnes of steam per year.
According to Nestle, 85% of the factory's thermal energy needs will be met, whilst six million Nm3 of natural gas and 29 tonnes of heavy furnace oil will be saved annually.
The move is part of a €7 million investment into renewable energy and sustainable initiatives, which involves additional biomass boilers across manufacturing sites, as well as the installation of solar plants.
The company aims to cut emissions by 20% by the end of this year, 50% by 2030, and to achieve Net Zero by 2050, aligning with UN Sustainable Development Goals 13 and 15.
Nestle’s head of technical for Asia, Oceania and Africa, Christian Schmid, said the investment demonstrates the company’s confidence in Pakistan’s potential.
He added that the biomass boiler highlights Nestle’s commitment to sustainability and creating shared value for Pakistan.
