Irish dairy co-operative seeks permission for biomass plants
Dairygold Co-operative Society, an Irish dairy co-operative based in Mitchelstown, County Cork, Ireland, is seeking planning permission for biomass plants at each of its sites in Mitchelstown and Mallow.
The organisation is Ireland's second largest dairy co-operative, and the country's third largest milk supplier, as it processes a volume of approximately 1.43 billion litres of grass-fed pastureland milk each year.
The move represents an effort to decarbonise the business by utilising steam rather than gas for milk processing capabilities.
The prospective Mitchelstown biomass facility's parapet height will be over 16 metres, and its stack height will exceed 24 metres.
If it is to be granted permission, between four and five batches of woodchip will be delivered to the site each day.
The existing supply network will be extended to provide water for milk processing.
The ash byproduct will be diverted into a gully, and a licensed contractor will remove it.
