Hungarian company to build biogas and ethanol plant in Nigeria

The Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) in Zaria, Nigeria, has entered into an agreement with Hungarian Agrar-Biothanol to produce fertiliser and ethanol in addition to electricity.

The facility will produce 1,333 tonnes of liquid organic fertiliser and 2.66 million litres of ethanol annually, as well as 1.2MW of electricity.

The plant will process farm residues and both animal and human waste as feedstock to produce both biogas and ethanol

When completed, the electricity produced would cater for 30% of the university’s electricity consumption, and enhance agricultural training and research.

The Vice Chancellor of the university, Ibrahim Garba, stated the independent power generation project became imperative as the institution could no longer sustain the 86 million naira (€246,621) monthly electricity bills.

Hungary’s ambassador to Nigeria, Ternak Gabor, said that Nigeria’s growing population made the diversification to renewable energy production necessary.
