Vietnam's Mekong Delta region offers an affordable and sustainable resource for biomass power generation, according to Tomoki Kakuta, CEO of Erex.
In particular, its abundance of straw and rice husks makes it an attractive prospect.
Kakuta was speaking at the Mekong Connect 2024 press meeting in the southern An Giang province, reported Viet Nam News.
He went on to say that biomass-to-energy is in alignment with Vietnam's commitments to reducing CO2 emissions under its sustainability roadmap.
Erex is building a 125-megawatt (MW) biomass power plant in the Mekong Delta province of Hau Giang, which is expected to commence commercial operations by the end of 2024.
The plant employs advanced technologies and uses rice husks as its primary input material, consuming around 130,000 tons annually. Erex is currently exploring the use of straw as an additional fuel source.
Additionally, the Japanese firm has initiated the construction of two biomass power plants, each with a capacity of 50 MW, in Vietnam’s northern provinces of Tuyen Quang and Yen Bai in October.
Construction of the two power plants is set to take 2.5 years.
Each can consume 500,000 tons of wood residue as fuel yearly.
