UK-based Anaero Technology, an anaerobic digestion (AD) research company, outlines its globally focused work.
Anaerobic digestion of degradable matter such as food waste, agricultural by-products, energy crops, wastewater sludge and food processing waste is currently the most sustainable treatment route to recover energy and fertilisers.
With treatment and environmental demands increasing, modern AD plants are expected to produce high operational and safety standards, high energy output and good quality digestate - all the while generating a good profit.
Managing these expectations requires tools to timely quantify biogas potential of feedstock to determine the pricing of treatment (gate fees), yield from feeds purchased or the potential impact from inhibitory feeds.
AD operators have at their disposal process control tools such as pH, Lab volatile fatty acids (VFA), CH4/CO2 content and VFA to alkalinity ratio (FOSTAC); but these are only useful after the feedstock has entered the AD plant, according to Anaero Technology. They do not provide confirmation of treatability or toxic behaviour of feedstock entering AD plants. Moreover,...
