Air Liquide has announced it will design, build and deliver its first unit in Brazil for the purification of biomethane produced from solid waste, in the landfill of Cariacica (ES).
The site, owned and operated by the Environmental Mark, receives half of all waste produced in Espírito Santo, Brazil.
The new facility will be able to transform these wastes and process 2,500 cubic metres per hour of biogas into biomethane.
At this rate, the site will have a total production capacity of 155 GWh/year of biomethane, which can be injected into the natural gas pipeline to supply power to the local community.
The site is expected to be operational in the second half of 2025.
Air Liquide said it has developed skills along the entire biomethane value chain, from the production of biogas from waste to its biomethane purification to be injected into the gas networks or compression/liquefaction with storage and transport to customers.
Caio Mogyca, director of new business models development - South America, said: “The opportunity to bring to the local market a technology already consolidated in other countries where the Air Liquide Group is present demonstrates the potential of our solutions for a more sustainable and low carbon future. We want to continue to put our knowledge and experience at the service of this commitment.”
Diogo Ribeiro, director of renewable energy of Grupo Marca, commented: “We chose Air Liquide to be our partner in this project for its consolidated experience in developing sustainable solutions that apply to the most diverse business profiles, in addition to common terms the commitment to values such as respect for the environment and the consolidation of the energy transition.”
