Assessing the late-2022 state of bioenergy progress in Africa and Asia inevitably involves looking at how these two multi-country continents are managing to cope with the eight-month-old energy shock created by Russia's invasion of Ukraine alongside the longer-term impact of climate change and the need to reduce damaging emissions before it's too late.
There is no single picture, of course, for either region but rather a mix of good and not-so-good responses to these two enormous issues.

Starting in Africa, the continent's focus on helping to address greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions will be further sharpened when the UN's next global Climate Change Conference (COP27) takes place in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, from 6 to 18 November.
Like a sports team which desperately doesn't want to lose while playing at home, the arrival of COP27 on Egyptian soil will add pressure to the domestic outcome of the event and the current performance of African nations in relation to climate change initiatives.
