Acciona wins €400 million waste to energy contract in Scotland
The Ness Energy Project will have the capacity to treat 150,000 tonnes of waste per year. Acciona will be responsible for the design and turnkey construction, commissioning and operation and maintenance of the plant for 20 years. The total budget for the project is estimated to be €400 million.
Acciona will be working in partnership with Indaver, a company specialising in waste management, for the duration of the project. It is hoped that the project will provide a long-term, sustainable solution for non-recyclable municipal solid waste produced in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and Moray, particularly as new legislation will ban waste from going into landfill in Scotland from 2021.
The new facility will be housed in a former gas storage site in Aberdeen where it will cleanly treat non-recyclable waste. It will also generate electricity for the National Grid and heating for households in the area.
