€45 million extension approved to Luxembourg’s biogas scheme
The European Commission has approved a €45 million, six year extension of an aid scheme to support biogas production in Luxembourg.
According to a statement from the European Commission, the goal of the scheme is to ensure a stable remuneration for plants which produce biogas from biomass and inject it into the natural gas network.
The prolongation of the scheme was approved on 24 October under EU State aid rules.
It was concluded that extending the scheme would help Luxembourg boost the share of electricity it produces from renewable sources in line with the environmental objectives of the EU, and without ‘unduly distorting competition.’
First approved in 2011, the scheme also underwent modification in 2015.
